Project: 556m2 Four bedroom house on lifestyle block, Tai Tapu, Canterbury

Client: Developer’s own home

A requirement for low build cost and yet a brief to provide the family with generous and practical spaces, and to maximize access to sun and the outdoors from every room, led to a long open extruded steel clad form.

Working with the owner, we chose materials sympathetic to the rural working buildings in the area, and a simple form of construction that would allow us to take advantage of the sculptural opportunities available within the discipline of a specific optimal structural roof span module.

Sold recently, with the architecture (‘improvements value’, excluding land cost) calculated to have returned the owner approximately 5 times the original construction budget.

Try getting that with your typical design-build mass housing company design!
